I will be heading to the Highland at least a few times this season but I don't know the Dragon movie at all...

"How to Train Your Dragon" is playing. I'll be busy tonight, but maybe tomorrow or Sunday? (touch wood)

  That's good to know. Thanks!

However, on a more positive note, you may want to look into getting the theater listed on the National Register. Working with Secretary of the Interior guidelines can get a twenty percent construction cost tax credit. I'm not certain if that still applies today, but it would be well worth looking into.

We used this 25 years ago to convert the carriage barn at the Merriman farmhouse into our design/architecture office. It proved the tipping point to rationalize the project.

Thanks again for the info, Yekimi. I've just had some ideas bouncing around in my head & wanted to separate the good ones from the not-so-good ones -- just in case I decide to get as serious as I am curious.

Thanks for the link to the Esquire, Todd. A friend of mine owns this one http://amherstcinema.com/ It can be done. I know it wouldn't be easy.

I'll think about it some more & see what other "What if's" I can think of.

Interesting point about the City of Akron. When Terry Deane was running the theater, he complained mightily about the City's lack of support. He felt they wouldn't support him because the City viewed the Highland as competition with their Lock 3 boondoggle.

You might want to check out the history of the Esquire Theater on Ludlow Ave in Clifton (Cincinnati). It's history and situation are almost identical to the Highland. Just subtract 20 years. When I was living there for school (1988-1992) developers tried to demolish it. The community rallied, sending the case all the way to the Ohio Supreme Court. Community won. The theater was split into several screen and an addition added a few more. The Clifton gaslight district in Cincinnati is exactly what Highland Square would be if it had the support of the Akron gov't, but that's another post. The theater's website is http://www.esquiretheatre.com/

Nah, I'm done. Just letting some people who have never worked in the theater industry how tough a business it is to nake a living in.
